U.S. Deputy Secretary of State discusses the future of the transatlantic relationship at TT launch event September 11, 2009 / Washington, DC

On September 9, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) hosted the public launch of Transatlantic Trends Survey 2009. Entitled The ‘Obama Bounce' in Europe: Its Reach, Its Limits, the event focused upon Obama's popularity in Europe, key transatlantic foreign policy challenges, an emerging divide in Europe, perceptions and effects of the economic crisis, differences in attitudes about climate change, the role of the European Union in world leadership, and Turkey's position in the transatlantic relationship. The event featured remarks by James B. Steinberg, Deputy Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State. The findings were presented by Bruce Stokes, international economics columnist for The National Journal and GMF transatlantic fellow, and the discussion was moderated by Karen Donfried, GMF executive vice president. The presentation and remarks provoked an interesting and diverse discussion about the survey's findings and the future of the transatlantic relationship.
