U.S. Secretary of State addresses EU audience at GMF’s Transatlantic Center in Brussels December 08, 2004 / Brussels
In his final visit to Europe as Secretary of State, and on the 3rd anniversary of GMF's Transatlantic Center in Brussels, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed a group of more than 350 students, EU Parliament interns and staffers, media, and other guests. He spoke on shared U.S. and European values and a tradition of commitment to freedom and democracy that forms the basis of the transatlantic relationship and its institutions.
Secretary Powell noted that a changing world and the shared threats facing the U.S. and Europe — twin pillars of democracy — make cooperation even more pressing. He acknowledged bumps in the road, particularly over the Iraq war, but said the relationship is getting better. Moving forward, Secretary Powell said the focus of transatlantic cooperation should go beyond European boundaries, and he mentioned Iran, Iraq, and new opportunities to solve the Israel-Palestine conflict as current priorities.
