Watch biofuels debate live from Capitol Hill, Friday, September 25 at 9am EST September 24, 2009 / Washington, DC

As the world struggles to address the challenges of climate change and energy, biofuels have emerged as a popular policy solution.  With ever evolving science and technological advancement, the case has been made that biofuels can alleviate dependence on fossil fuels while helping to meet climate change challenges and boost rural development.  The case has also been made that some biofuels do more harm than good, using productive land for negative or marginal climate benefits while putting further strain on already delicate forest and food supplies.  While there remain questions around the merits of each argument, recent policies in both the United States and European Union have incentivized increased production of energy crops.

Tim Searchinger, transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund and research scholar at Princeton University will debate against Bruce Dale, professor at Michigan State University about the most pressing issues concerning biofuels. The event will be moderated by Juliet Eilperin of the Washington Post.
