What are the prospects for reforming EU agricultural policies? November 13, 2008 / Brussels

On November 13, GMF, together with European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), co-hosted a seminar entitled, "What are the prospects for reforming EU agricultural policies?" Roger Waite, Editor of AGRA FACTS and AGRA FOCUS and a GMF fellow, is a long-time observer and commentator on EU agriculture policy. He lead the discussion which focused on the likely developments in EU agricultural policy and how various reform strategies could resonate with politicians and the public.

Agriculture has returned to the top of the European policy agenda. The global rise in food prices has pushed the EU to suspend some agricultural tariffs, and the "health check" of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) began the process of scrutinizing the EU farm subsidy regime, a process that will continue under the review of the European budget. The Doha Round of trade negotiations may have stalled for now, but pressure to reform European agricultural policies may be generated by these negotiations in the future.
