What Does Japan Think? December 07, 2009 / Tokyo, Japan

The German Marshall Fund of the United States, in collaboration with the Tokyo Foundation, held a seminar called ‘What Does Japan Think?' in Tokyo, 7-10 December, 2009. Over the course of four days, senior European and U.S. journalists, scholars and policy makers discussed a changing Japan with Japanese journalists and scholars, and met with ministers and representatives of the new Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) government.

Topics of discussion included the impact of the new Hatoyama administration on domestic politics; the U.S.-Japan alliance; Japans defense policy with reference to North Korea and the rise of China; Japan's economic policy; multilateralism in Asia and Asia-Pacific, and Japanese perspectives on climate change.

The seminar and meetings gave opinion leaders from the United States and Europe a rare and timely opportunity to network with their peers in Tokyo, and to gain an insight into the priorities and workings of the new government, as well as a Japanese analysis on the state of Japan's relationship with Europe and the United States.

The following articles were published as a result of the seminar:

Japanese Obsessions, New York Times, December 14, Roger Cohen
Obama's Japan Headache, New York Times, December 10, Roger Cohen
