Young Strategists Forum 2013 February 01, 2013 / Tokyo, Japan

The second Young Strategists Forum (YSF) was held in Tokyo from February 1-5, 2013 in partnership with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. Emerging leaders – 6 Americans, 4 Japanese, 3 Europeans, 1 Indian, and 1 Indonesian – selected through a competitive application process gathered in Tokyo for this program. Activities included a half-day seminar on Asian geopolitics taught by Princeton University Professor and GMF Non-Resident Senior Fellow Aaron Friedberg; a 36-hour simulation of long-term competition in the Asia-Pacific led by GMF Transatlantic Fellow Dr. Daniel M. Kliman with Princeton PhD Candidate Zack Cooper facilitating; a day of meetings in Tokyo followed by a reception hosted at the US Defense Attaché’s residence; and a tour and briefings on the USS George Washington in Yokosuka. Together, these activities enabled participants to better understand the challenge of pursuing long-term foreign policy objectives amidst short-term crises and provided a window on Japanese strategic thinking and the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance.
