From the Hosts
Welcome to the Bucharest Conference!

On behalf of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Chatham House, we are pleased to welcome you to The Bucharest Conference alongside the official 2008 NATO Summit. We are proud to bring you this year's transatlantic forum at a time when the alliance is facing serious decisions and challenges that will shape its future.

The Bucharest Conference provides a platform for leading policymakers, opinion leaders, scholars, and business people from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the most pressing issues facing NATO and the international community. The conference agenda focuses on topics that include NATO's operation in Afghanistan, the situation in the Balkans, missile defense, energy security, Russia's relationship with the West, and NATO's future role in global affairs.

The Bucharest Conference is designed for frank, open dialogue and your participation is integral to the success of this forum. We are confident that the Bucharest Conference will continue where the 2004 Istanbul Conference and the 2006 Riga Conference left off. Ahead of the Bucharest Conference, Robin Shepherd, senior research fellow at Chatham House, has edited The Bucharest Papers, a series of short policy papers on NATO's mission in Afghanistan; NATO enlargement; NATO's relationship with Russia; and global cyber defense and NATO.

Thank you for participating in The Bucharest Conference. We are delighted you could join us for this important event.

Sincerely,

Craig Kennedy
