Romania & Bucharest
About Romania

Romania is situated in the southeastern part of Central Europe and shares borders with Hungary to the northwest, Yugoslavia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, the Black Sea and Ukraine to the southeast and to the north and the Republic of Moldova to the east. Incorporating over 22 million people, Romania is the second largest country in the area, after Poland.

Romania's territory features splendid mountains, beautiful rolling hills, fertile plains and numerous rivers and lakes. About a third of the country consists of the Carpathian Mountains (also known as the Transylvanian Alps). Forests cover over one quarter of the country and the fauna is one of the richest in Europe including bears, deer, lynx, chamois and wolves. Another third is hills and plateaus, rich with orchards and vineyards. The final third is a fertile plain, largely devoted to agriculture. The legendary Danube River ends its eight-country journey through eight European countries at the Black Sea by forming one of the biggest and most interesting wetlands in the world, the Danube Delta.

About Bucharest

Bucharest, capital of Romania since 1862, is home to 2.6 million Romanians. Remodeled in the late 19th century by French and French-trained architects, the city features large neoclassical buildings and historical charm - from the streets of the Old City Centre, which are slowly being restored, to the grand architecture of the Royal Palace, and the lush green of Cismigiu Park. Nicolae Ceausescu's legacy is also evident in the monolithic Parliament Palace (formerly called the People's Palace), which at 3.76 million square feet stands as the world's second largest administrative building after the U.S. Pentagon.

Bucharest also boasts a buzzing cultural scene with 37 museums, 22 theatres, 18 art galleries, concert halls, exquisite Orthodox churches, an opera house, and nightclubs. Every two years, Bucharest is host to the George Enescu International Festival, a prestigious cultural event named after the famous Romanian musician and composer. Renowned orchestras, conductors and soloists perform at the Romanian Athenaeum, a hall with acoustics comparable to Milan's La Scala.
