The Cost of a German Breakup With Turkey
Lately, it seems that every week Germany’s ties with Turkey hit another low point, and there are few signs of this trend reversing any time soon. Under the current circumstances, it might be tempting for some German politicians to steer toward a complete breakdown in Turkish relations. But considering the deep and long-standing ties between Berlin and Ankara, this would not be in either one’s interests, or those of the European Union. The German government should consider the cost of any more political escalation and focus on realistic areas of mutual interest to safeguard dialogue with Turkey at the EU level.
