In an interview for the Slovak press agency TASR, Joerg Forbrig, Transatlantic Fellow for Central and Eastern Europe at the German Marshall Fund of the United States discusses the new reality in relationships between the West and Russia. He outlines a number of broad scenarios for the development of these relationships following the Russian annexation of Crimea and its ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine. Against this background, he shares his impressions of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s leadership throughout the crisis, and draws the conclusion that in facing the challenge emanating from Russia, sustaining and strengthening European and transatlantic unity will be key.
