Yi-Tak Lai, better known as Megan, was born in Hong Kong and has a newly minted Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Maryland. Abulfazl Fakhari (“call me A.B.”) is an Iranian in his fourth year of a doctoral program in organic chemistry at Maryland.
In the global competition for talent, Megan and A.B. are not the kind of immigrants whom politicians want to keep out with a wall along the Rio Grande. They are part of the other debate: whether the United States needs to lure and keep more foreign scientists and engineers.
