For More Optimism in the West
Editor's Note: Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff spoke to Germany's NTV about his new book, The World Needs the West.
China is becoming more and more powerful, the United States loses influence, and the EU is disintegrating – not good prospects for the West. However, this is not a reason to surrender, argues foreign policy expert Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff. Brexit, Donald Trump or the powerful autocracy China – all of these factors make observers in the West more pessimistic where the global order is concerned. But has Western democracy in fact lost its purpose?
In his book, The World Needs the West, Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff asks for a fight for the West. That would also imply letting go of certain ways of wishful thinking.
NTV: Why does the world still need the West?
Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff: We need the West so that we can continue to live in a liberal order, along with other freely organized states – that is the West.
