The Mutual Admiration of Trump and Putin is Illusory

On November 15th, Dr. Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer gave an interview to the French weekly L’Express. She discussed Trump’s future foreign policy. She anticipated that Trump will be willing to make “deals” with Russia and China, while making concessions, which could include recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea or China’s expansion in the South China Sea. However, she believes that the Trump-Putin mutual admiration has been overstated and will probably not result in a replica of Obama’s 2009 “reset” policy. She believes European allies will be impacted by these potential changes in US strategic and diplomatic posture, and will have to find ways to remain relevant in the geopolitical game.
