The New Silk Road: The Chinese Approach
President of China Xi Jinping concluded his state visit to Poland on June 21. One of the main topics discussed in Warsaw was the Chinese project of the new Silk Road. Poland – as many other countries in Central Eurasia – has high hopes for this initiative, however, restraint should be counselled. The 21st century Silk Road is a risky venture for China. It is designed to pass through some of the world’s most conflictual regions and often engages rent-seeking and kleptocratic elites. Beijing’s ambitious goals might face harsh reality.
