The 4th Mercator European Dialogue offers a unique space to (re-)connect members of national parliaments just days after the French presidential elections, and with the German and British electoral campaigns in full swing. Building on previous conversations, it will provide an opportunity to explore concrete ways forward for Europe.
The Mercator European Dialogue is a chance for legislators to share and (co-)generate ideas with colleagues from across Europe, and translate these into avenues for action at the national level, in an informal space for shared conversations, a trusting environment, and open-agenda format.
This event will be entitled The Journey Ahead and its focus will be on the implications of a Europe of different speeds on national contexts. Could a flexible EU model of integration take into account the interests of potential winners and losers? What shape would this transition take given the current shifting political constellations in Europe? The conversations will tie in with insights from the previous meeting in Bratislava, where many members of the network agreed that a Europe of different speeds was the most likely if not current model of EU integration, inspired by important outside sources such as the Commission’s white paper on future scenarios for the EU, and expert views on the ongoing campaigns and elections in France, Germany, and the U.K.
