This year marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death and the 1968 protests. While progress on civil rights has been made on some fronts, the Black Lives Matter movement of the past years and Childish Gambino’s recent “This is America” single suggest otherwise. Looking ahead to the U.S. midterm elections in November, understanding social issues such as voter suppression as well as the existence of hate and extremist groups, are key in analyzing political developments. We would like to invite you to an evening discussion with Lecia Brooks who will provide insight into the domestic factors sparking action across the country. Sergey Lagodinsky will offer his perspective of the issues within the European context.
The event is part of GMF’s Understanding America Series, which assesses new directions in U.S. foreign policy, society, and politics as well as the implications for Europe and transatlantic relations.
