The Challenge to Civil Society in Belarus
On Tuesday, November 17, 2015, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), Freedom House, and Open Society Foundations (OSF) hosted a small, off-the-record breakfast roundtable discussion with Ales Bialiatski, Chair of the Human Rights Center Viasna and renowned human rights defender. Ivan Vejvoda, senior vice president for programs at GMF, opened the event by providing introductory remarks. Sofya Orlosky, Program Manager at Freedom House, moderated the discussion with Bialiatski, which focused on the future of civil society in Belarus given the rapidly evolving regional, political, and economic environment in Belarus. The discussion was attended by members of the private, diplomatic, and think tank communities.
