European interest and concern about Turkey, and the country’s importance for European interests has increased recently mainly, but not exclusively, because of developments in Syria and the refugee crisis. The failed coup d’état of July 2016 has complicated relations even more. Understanding Turkey’s domestic situation and internal dynamics, as well as the country’s foreign policy priorities and the consequences for Europe has become a priority. On 3-4 November 2016, members of the Mercator European Dialogue network met with participants of the Global Turkey in Europe program to discuss the current state of relations between Turkey and the EU. The workshop further involved a visit to Eleonas, the biggest refugee camp in the city of Athens.
