GMF workshop on post-industrial development highlights Great Lakes region’s future economic potentialOctober 02, 2009 / Cleveland, Ohio & Detroit, MichiganGMF, with the support of the Ford Foundation and in close cooperation with local leaders, hosted workshops in Cleveland, Ohio on September 14 and 15, and in Detroit, Michigan on September 18, to examine the concept of regionalism, how regional identities are fostered, and how regional strategies can help promote economic development. The workshops drew on the experiences of older industrial European cities as well as the perspectives of local and regional leaders to explore in depth a number of topics relating to these themes.

The Feed-In Tariff: European and U.S. Policies to Promote Renewable ElectricityMay 29, 2009 / Washington, DCOn May 29, the Climate & Energy Program in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Foundation hosted a luncheon for staffers, business representatives, and European and U.S. climate policy experts on Capitol Hill to discuss the “feed-in tariff.” The feed-in tariff is a policy to promote renewable electricity that has been credited with driving the deployment of renewable electricity in Europe and is being considered by several U.S. states and in Congress.

The Central Texas Transatlantic Rail Workshop brought five European rail and public transportation experts to San Antonio, San Marcos, and Austin, Texas from February 18-20, 2009, to help local leaders and the broader public think about ways to address the challenges inherent in several passenger rail initiatives - commuter rail, light rail, bus rapid transit (BRT), and intercity rail.

Transatlantic Cities Network Study Tour to Belgrade and TurinJanuary 28, 2009 / Belgrade, Serbia & Turin, Italy

From January 28 to February 5, the GMF Comparative Domestic Policy (CDP) program led a study tour and workshop for 20 Transatlantic Cities Network (TCN) representatives to Belgrade, Serbia, and Turin, Italy. The tour began in Belgrade, where the TCN representatives participated in meetings, briefings, and site visits designed by the Balkan Trust for Democracy to provide a context for understanding the particular systemic challenges that the city of Belgrade is facing. From Belgrade, the group traveled to Torino, where they spent two days learning about the city’s strategy for urban transformation, developed in the mid-1990s and still undergoing implementation today.

Portland city officials glean bicycle infrastructure policy from Amsterdam, CopenhagenOctober 05, 2008 / Amsterdam and CopenhagenFrom October 5-12, the German Marshall Fund organized a study tour on bicycle infrastructure and policy for 13 representatives from Portland, Oregon, representing Portland Metro Council's Blue Ribbon Committee for Trails. The group, made up of civic, elected, and business leaders, visited two of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world, Amsterdam and Copenhagen, to learn how the experiences of these cities could inform the development of more than 900 miles of user-friendly, multi-modal trails in the Portland metropolitan region.
Transatlantic Cities Network launch convenes a meeting of U.S.-EU city representativesSeptember 25, 2008 / Washington, DCFrom September 25-27, GMF launched the Transatlantic Cities Network (TCN) with a three-day workshop, bringing together for the first time representatives from 15 of the network's 25 cities. The representatives, a diverse group of planners, architects, leaders of community foundations and organizations, members of the business community, city officials, and policy experts, gathered at GMF's headquarters in Washington, DC, to collaboratively define a vision and purpose for the network.
Broadbent, Turner discuss urbanization in Canada and the United StatesJuly 17, 2008 / Washington, DCOn July 17, GMF hosted a luncheon in the Cannon House Building on Capitol Hill with Alan Broadbent, the chairman of the Maytree Foundation, and Congressman Michael Turner (R-OH). Mr. Broadbent opened the event by discussing his recent book, Urban Nation. In addition to highlighting the book’s main points, he offered ways in which its prescriptions for empowering Canadian cities can be applied to an American context.

On November 5, GMF hosted a presentation and discussion entitled "Fighting urban sprawl in Europe: the story of Lyon," with Hubert Julien-Laferrière, Greater Lyon Coucil Delegate and mayor of the ninth district of Lyon. The presentation, which focused on Lyon's efforts to fight urban sprawl, was attended by representatives from the business, nonprofit, civic, and academic communities.
