On Wednesday March 30, the GMF Paris office hosted Senior Transatlantic Fellow Bruce Stokes for a conference on the “Euro crisis, a perspective from the United States,” in collaboration with the Groupe d’Economie Mondiale (GEM-Sciences Po), headed by moderator Patrick Messerlin. The audience gathered around 25 experts from French and European institutions, think tanks, and research centers.

On March 28, GMF Paris Office, the Transatlantic Academy, and the Asia Centre, in collaboration with CERI-Sciences Po, organized an international workshop on the rise of China and its implications for the West, gathering over 130 participants from the main French institutions, Embassies, business sector and the media. Issues included different perspectives of the United States and the EU on China, views from other important neighboring Asian countries and hypothesis about China’s stabilization strategies.

On March 15, the German Marshall Fund (GMF) Brussels office launched the first edition of the Transatlantic Trends: Leaders survey, which was conducted in cooperation with the Compagnia di San Paolo. Brussels office Deputy Director Corinna Hörst moderated the event, while Prof. Pierangelo Isernia of the University of Siena and a member of the Transatlantic Trends advisory board presented the findings. Panelists Dr. Christian Leffler of the European External Action Service, and Member of the European Parliament Ana Gomes from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats shared their own thoughts on the findings to a full house.

New report released on impact of economic crisis in eastern EuropeDecember 09, 2010 / On November 30, GMF hosted the Washington, DC release of a new report titled “Whither growth in central and eastern Europe? Policy lessons for an integrated Europe.” The report, done in cooperation with the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel and the Vienna Institute for International Economics, focused on the impact of the economic crisis on Eastern Europe countries, which have been particularly affected.
Secretary General of European Parliament Addresses Institutional Evolution after the Lisbon TreatyNovember 30, 2010 / The event, moderated by Senior Director of Policy Programs Thomas Kleine Brockhoff, focused on the evolution of EU policymaking after the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty. Welle also addressed the Euro’s stability in light of recent financial crises and the impact of European Parliament on international trade agreements. Accompanied by members of European Parliament’s Washington-based staff, Welle emphasized the importance of transatlantic cooperation as the U.S. Congress and EU Parliament increasingly experience legislative and regulatory convergence.
Legatum Institute launches Prosperity Index 2010November 10, 2010 / Washington, DCIn a world beset by dramatic change, where many different factors impact well-being in multiple and complex ways, it is useful to assess the prosperity of nations through more than simple income-based measurements like GDP. The Legatum Prosperity Index 2010 offers a multi-faceted analysis of prosperity, examining 110 countries using 89 different variables. On November 10, 2010, GMF hosted a public event for the release of the 2010 Legatum Prosperity Index and the data concerning transatlantic relations.
