On Thursday, October 7, 2010 the Washington Office of the German Marshall Fund hosted a lunch with Bozidar Djelic, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development for the Republic of Serbia, to discuss the prospects for Serbia’s future. BRUSSELS – on September 23, GMF hosted in partnership with the United States Mission to the European Union a discussion on how to build a transatlantic partnership on data transfer and privacy protection. On Wednesday, July 21, the Southern California Leadership Network (SCLN) hosted the Honorable David Martinon, Consul General of France in Los Angeles, for a conversation with local Marshall Memorial Fellowship alumni. The discussion focused on France’s economic, cultural, and geopolitical interests in southern California as well as U.S.-French relations. The Seventh Stockholm China Forum was held on the 12th and 13th of June, 2010, with the support of the Riksbankens Juibeleumsfond and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Topics discussed included Chinese foreign policy after the financial crisis, how to improve China's relationship with the West, the Iranian nuclear crisis, and ways to achieve economic rebalancing. On January 28, GMF Berlin hosted the Independent Commission on Turkey to discuss its recent report, "Turkey in Europe: Breaking the Vicious Circle". The event featured Martti Ahtisaari, Nobel Peace Laureate of 2008 and former President of Finland; Emma Bonino,Vice President of the Italian Senate and former European Commissioner; Hans van den Broek, former Foreign Minister of the Netherlands and former European Commissioner; and Albert Rohan, former Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria. Karl-Heinz Klär, State Secretary of Federal and European Affairs of Rhineland-Palatinate, provided introductory remarks. On February 6, GMF hosted Antonio Milososki, the minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, and Kurt D. Volker, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, for a discussion on the status of Macedonia's negotiations for NATO accession and EU membership, as well as regional issues. On January 4, GMF hosted Ivailo Kalfin, the foreign minister and deputy prime minister of the republic of Bulgaria, for a luncheon roundtable entitled "What Next for the Balkans," in which he examined the pitfalls and opportunities of a fragile upcoming year for the Balkan region, and highlighted the region's relationship with both Europe and the United States. On December 11, GMF organized a small roundtable discussion at the Italian Embassy with the president of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, who was accompanied by Massimo D'Alema, the Italian foreign minister. The meeting was moderated by GMF President Craig Kennedy and participants included several GMF board members as well as senior analysts. On October 26-27, the German Marshall Fund hosted a conference in Kiev, Ukraine for experts and policymakers from Europe and the United States to discuss the eastern neighborhood of the European and transatlantic community. This conference was jointly organized with the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Center for Applied Policy Research in Munich, Germany. On May 24, GMF and the Alfred Herrhausen Society invited high-level representatives from the economic, scientific, and political communities to Berlin to discuss globalization and the ramifications of the G8's shift in focus to Africa, with special consideration for Asia's increasing influence on the African continent. Jörg Asmussen, Director-General of the German National and International Financial Markets and Monetary Policy Department, directly involved in the G8 preparations, opened the conference. On May 15, GMF held a series of events surrounding the EU-G8 Series, a two-panel workshop on the French Presidential elections and their impact on Europe and transatlantic relations, at the International Club in the Federal Foreign office. On March 18-20, GMF and its partners, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) and the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation held the inaugural Stockholm China Forum. On March 6 in Berlin, the German Marshall Fund, the German Council on Foreign Relations, and the London-based Russia Foundation brought together leading experts on energy policy to discuss European energy security, just two days before the EU Council summit in Brussels. On January 29, the GMF Ankara office, together with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), held a roundtable discussion on the nuclearization of Iran and regional security dynamics. The discussion was chaired by Jon Wolfsthal, Senior Fellow at CSIS, Alexander Lennon, Editor in Chief of The Washington Quarterly, CSIS's flagship journal and Suat Kiniklioglu, Director of the GMF Ankara office.
