In order to feed an estimated population of 9 billion in 20-30 years time, the world must make difficult policy choices resulting in significant changes. Productivity needs to be dramatically increased, but climate change, increased scarcity of resources, including water, land, and phosphates, and the variability of fuel and other input costs will present challenges to our collective ability to produce this additional food. The Wilton Park conference assessed key challenges, looking beyond recent price spikes, and identified a number of national and international policy priorities.

The panelists included the Honorable Ulla Tørnæs, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, the Honorable Bert Koenders, Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation, and Jonathan Lash, President of the World Resources Institute. Craig Kennedy, President of GMF, officially opened the event and Lael Brainard, on leave from the Brookings Institution, moderated the discussion. Overall, the event was very successful and produced an insightful and useful discussion about the many challenges and prospects of addressing climate change and development issues together in the future.
Portland city officials glean bicycle infrastructure policy from Amsterdam, CopenhagenOctober 05, 2008 / Amsterdam and CopenhagenFrom October 5-12, the German Marshall Fund organized a study tour on bicycle infrastructure and policy for 13 representatives from Portland, Oregon, representing Portland Metro Council's Blue Ribbon Committee for Trails. The group, made up of civic, elected, and business leaders, visited two of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world, Amsterdam and Copenhagen, to learn how the experiences of these cities could inform the development of more than 900 miles of user-friendly, multi-modal trails in the Portland metropolitan region.

On January 4, GMF hosted Ivailo Kalfin, the foreign minister and deputy prime minister of the republic of Bulgaria, for a luncheon roundtable entitled "What Next for the Balkans," in which he examined the pitfalls and opportunities of a fragile upcoming year for the Balkan region, and highlighted the region's relationship with both Europe and the United States.

GMF celebrates Marshall Plan 60th AnniversaryMay 25, 2007 / Berlin, GermanyOn May 25, GMF Berlin hosted an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the German Marshall Fund, and the 25th birthday of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) Program, as well as the Manfred Wörner Seminar (WFS). Over a hundred alumni of the programs attended the event, which was co-hosted by the State Representation of Northrhine-Westfalia in Berlin. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, former President of the German Parliament; Dieter Berg, Chairman of the Board of the Robert Bosch Foundation; and several Central and Eastern European Ambassadors helped celebrate the evening.

On May 24, GMF and the Alfred Herrhausen Society invited high-level representatives from the economic, scientific, and political communities to Berlin to discuss globalization and the ramifications of the G8's shift in focus to Africa, with special consideration for Asia's increasing influence on the African continent. Selling Democracy: Films of the Marshall Plan at 2005 Filmfest DCApril 15, 2005 / Washington, DCWith support from the German Marshall Fund, the 2005 Washington, DC, International Film Festival will showcase a series of films from the late 1940s and early 1950s that documented and promoted initiatives of the European Recovery Program, familiarly known as the Marshall Plan. The program will be launched with an opening event on April 15 at Regal Cinemas with remarks by Harlan Cleveland, former assistant director for Europe at the Marshall Plan Agency.
Trade & Development Speaker Series: Putting Development Back into DohaApril 13, 2005 / Washington, DCGMF’s Trade & Development program hosted Dr. Thomas Hertel, founding director of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), for a discussion on how WTO negotiations can successfully spur development.
