A Future Together: Europe's Neighborhood
- Christian Danielsson, Director-General for Enlargement, European Commission
- Jonathan D. Katz, Senior Fellow, The German Marshall Fund of the United States
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) invites you to a timely conversation with Christian Danielsson, Director-General for Enlargement at the European Commission in Brussels. Danielsson will provide an update on EU’s engagement in the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and Turkey. On May 17, the EU and Western Balkan countries will hold a summit in Sophia, Bulgaria. DG Danielsson will also provide an update on the outcome of the summit and EU–Turkish relations in the lead up to Turkey’s June 24 election. The EU is facing a number of challenges in its Eastern Neigbourhood, including recent political upheaval in Armenia, ongoing challenges related to Russia and efforts to keep Ukraine on its anti-corruption democratic reform path. The EU and Ukraine are scheduled to hold their 20th summit this summer.
This timely conversation follows the publication of the European Commission’s April progress reports on the enlargement process in the Western Balkan states and Turkey. The enlargement process and accompanying economic reform packages form part of the backbone of the European Union’s relationship with these countries. How does the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) view and use the findings of these reports in its work with these states? And how will the pace and tone of negotiations change over the coming months and years in response to changes in the region and in the European Union?
