On September 10th 2015, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) hosted a roundtable discussion in Brussels with U.S. Coordinator for Sanctions Policy Ambassador Daniel Fried. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Ian Lesser, senior director for Foreign and Security Policy, and executive director of GMF’s Brussels office. The discussion revolved around the effectiveness of the U.S. and EU sanctions on Russia emphasizing the need to fully implement the Minsk Protocol in order remove the sanctions. Ambassador Fried’s remarks were followed by a discussion on the implementation of new sanctions if the situation in Eastern Ukraine further deteriorates. The roundtable concluded with a brief question and answer session, with those attending the roundtable touching on a number of subjects such as the direct and indirect impact of the sanctions on Russian economy and the urgent need of reform in Ukraine.
