Russia Sanctions: Effective Response or Ersatz Policy? A Briefing with Ambassador Daniel Fried
The German Marshall Fund of the United States’ Berlin office organized a lunch discussion on September 23, 2015, featuring Ambassador Daniel Fried, U.S. Coordinator for Sanctions Policy. The event was moderated by Dr. Joerg Forbrig, Director of the Fund for Belarus Democracy at GMF.
Experts from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, think tanks, and businesses attended the roundtable hosted by Commerzbank’s office at the Brandenburg Gate.
The subject of discussion was the sanctions policy towards Russia, with particular emphasis on the coordination and collaborative effort between the United States and Europe. During the conversation, the effectiveness of the sanctions targeting Russia was discussed within the framework of other options and with respect to the economic effect the sanctions have had on the Russian Federation. The participants also commented on the political consensus within the U.S. regarding the sanctions regime as well as on European and transatlantic unity in terms of goals and timeline in looking ahead.
