YTN Brussels Attends President Obama’s Speech
On Wednesday, March 26, a group from GMF's Young Transatlantic Network attended the remarks of the President of the United States Barack Obama at the Center for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels. The event brought together young and senior professionals from the European institutions and the public and private sector. Laura Hemmati, EU chief of the women’s network ‘Leaderise’ introduced President Barack Obama and encouraged young people to forge their own career path. President Obama’s speech was dedicated to the security situation in Ukraine and criticized Russia’s aggressive stance toward Crimea. Throughout history, both Europe and the U.S. fought for their right to self-determination and the protection of democratic values. As freedom should not be taken for granted, it is the responsibility of Europe and the U.S. to isolate Russia if the country stays on its current course, according to the President. This isolation should not be expressed with military means while a diplomatic political solution should be pursued. The speech was the only public speech given by U.S. President Barack Obama during his trip to Brussels.
