How to Apply


BTD grants generally range from $5,000 and $75,000, with most grants falling between $15,000 and $25,000. BTD can support multi-year projects, renewable on an annual basis contingent upon satisfactory interim reports and performance.

There are no application deadlines. Project proposals are accepted on a rolling basis and grant decisions are made monthly. Final approval will be made by a grantmaking committee or, if over $25,000, by the German Marshall Fund’s Board of Trustees.

All inquiries will be acknowledged by email within two weeks of receipt. Final decisions are typically announced within 12 – 16 weeks of application.

Questions related to proposal preparation may be sent by e-mail to balkantrust@gmfus.org. Once a grant has been awarded, questions should be emailed directly to the responsible program officer at his/her email address.

To apply, please send your completed application to balkantrust@gmfus.org. Subject line should include: the word ‘PROPOSAL’, the name of your organization, and the country in which your organization is located. Proposals will be accepted via email only. Proposals which are not sent to balkantrust@gmfus.org will not be considered.
