Immigration & Integration
When it comes to international migration, U.S. and Western European countries face many of the same challenges and opportunities. Issues such as admission and integration policies, remittances and development, labor market impacts, national identity, and the relationship between immigration and security are just some of the topics constantly debated by policymakers and the media alike. Staying true to its mission, GMF aims to enhance transatlantic communication on these issues while at the same time fostering transnational dialogue with migrants' countries of origin.
GMF's Immigration and Integration policy initiative programs provide institutional support to Transatlantic Study Teams that are working on important points of interest in the immigration debate, such as university institutes and think tanks. Through compiling existing data, policy analysis, and dialogue with policymakers, selected study teams gather facts, convene leading opinion leaders on both sides of the Atlantic, promote open dialogue, and help to advance the policy debate. GMF's support is provided in the form of annual grants, ensuring that salient questions are promptly addressed and that information is available to decision-makers. Information about institutions that are currently receiving support can be found here.
In addition to a long-standing tradition of grantmaking, the Immigration and Integration policy initiative makes its own contribution to ongoing research and discussion through a variety of projects and events. Through partnerships with major European and American foundations, the program conducts research on public opinion through the annual survey Transatlantic Trends: Immigration and holds an annual Transatlantic Forum on Migration and Integration for 60 young leaders from more than 15 countries. All programs are designed to encourage dialogue and disseminate information about immigration. (Click here to see all the latest events on migration)
