- Gen. Petr Pavel, Chairman, NATO Military Committee
- Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy, The German Marshall Fund of the United States
The Euroatlantic community today faces a wide array of security challenges ranging from Russia’s continued aggression in Eastern Ukraine, North Korea’s nuclear sabre-rattling, and threats spilling over from failing and failed states. Against this backdrop, the need for a strong and unified Alliance is more urgent than ever. Yet, domestic politics, financial constraints, and lacking political will threaten to undercut the Alliance’s need to build-up capacities to counter potential military, terrorist, and hybrid threats.
With these challenges in mind, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) invites you to a conversation with the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel. This on-the-record discussion will be moderated by GMF executive vice president Derek Chollet, and will address threats from state and non-state actors with a particular focus on Russia and ISIL, as well as NATO’s current missions in Afghanistan and beyond. Moreover, the conversation will explore how NATO can best position itself to meet the challenges ahead, and set targets for defense spending and enhanced military and cyber capabilities.
