Matt Joyce is a non-resident fellow at The German Marshall Fund of the United States and has served as a U.S. Army officer since 2005, both active duty and reserve. He has focused on China political and military affairs for the Department of Defense and formerly served as the Deputy Division Chief of the China/Taiwan/Mongolia Division for the Joint Staff J-5 (Strategic Plans and Policy) at the Pentagon. He earned his Master’s in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, was a Fulbright Fellow in China, and a Robert Bosch Fellow in Germany. In the Army Reserve, Matt currently serves as a China Foreign Area Officer and Assistant Army Attaché and has performed duty at the Defense Attaché Office in Beijing. He lives in Berlin, Germany.
