Post-Crisis Global Challenges Event Series – After the Meltdown: The Rise of State CapitalismMarch 10, 2010On March 10, GMF Brussels hosted an event entitled, "Post-Crisis Global Challenges Event Series - Part III - After the Meltdown: The Rise of State Capitalism." It featured Marc De Vos, Professor at the Ghent University Law School and general director of the Brussels based think-tank Itinera Institute, and Clay Lowery, Former Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury (2005-2009) and currently managing director at Glover Park Group.
U.S. Undersecretary Hormats speaks at conference on the transatlantic economic partnershipJanuary 25, 2010On January 25, GMF hosted an event on Capitol Hill titled, "The New European Commission - A Renewal of the Transatlantic Economic Partnership?" This half-day conference, which featured panelists from international institutions, multinational corporations, think tanks, and the media, focused on the future of the transatlantic economic relationship in light of the global financial crisis; changes to the European Union's architecture; and recent shifts in global governance from the G8 to the G20. Robert Hormats, Undersecretary of State for Economic, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State , delivered a keynote address on the state of the transatlantic economic partnership and the future of the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC).

Transatlantic Approaches to Tackling the Financial Crisis DiscussedMay 11, 2009On Monday, May 11, the German Marshall Fund (GMF) together with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation hosted a panel discussion in Berlin titled "Tackling the Financial Crisis - Approaches From Both Sides of the Atlantic," featuring GMF Transatlantic Fellow Joseph Quinlan, Member of the German Bundestag Otto Fricke (FDP), Steven Clemons of the New America Foundation and Daniela Schwarzer of Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. The discussion was moderated by Petra Pinzler of the German weekly DIE ZEIT.
GMF event outlines ambitions of London G-20 summitMarch 13, 2009On March 13, the German Marshall Fund of the United States hosted Dominick Chilcott, deputy head of mission of the British Embassy, for a luncheon discussion to outline the ambitions of the British Government for the upcoming G-20 summit in London and explain how these goals will relate to growing signs of protectionism. William A. Reinsch, president of the National Foreign Trade Council, provided a response to Mr. Chilcott's remarks.
The impact of the financial crisis on Central and Eastern EuropeDecember 10, 2008On December 10, GMF hosted a Congressional staff lunch discussion with GMF Transatlantic Fellow Joe Quinlan, who delivered remarks on the current financial crisis, its root causes, and how the U.S. and Europe should respond. Joe's presentation provoked a lively discussion moderated by Sean Mulvaney, GMF's Director of Economic Policy at GMF. Sixteen Congressional staffers with foreign policy, trade, and financial services backgrounds attended, as well as one Member of Congress. This highlighted the pressing need for more sensible policy dialogue on global economic issues.
Private Foundations as Global Civil Entrepreneurs: An Answer to Poor Performance of Global Governance?September 04, 2008On September 4, GMF and the Heinrich Böll Foundation co-hosted a discussion entitled, "Private foundations as global civil entrepreneurs: An answer to poor performance of global governance?" Tine Stein and Lora Viola of the Social Science Research Center in Berlin were invited to share their research on the role of social and civil entrepreneurship in international development in government agencies, private foundations, non-profits, and global institutions.
Mutual recognition of securities exchanges: Prospects for transatlantic cooperationMarch 04, 2008On March 4, GMF hosted a luncheon discussion on "Mutual recognition of securities exchanges: Prospects for transatlantic cooperation." A system such as this would allow foreign exchanges and broker-dealers to offer investment products to U.S. investors without first having to register with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), an idea suggested last year by senior SEC officials and discussed at roundtable convened by the SEC. To better understand the issue, GMF hosted Randal K. Quarles of the Carlyle Group, Nicolas Véron of the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, and Peter Chepucavage of the International Association of Small Broker Dealers and Advisors.
Opportunities and challenges for the Transatlantic Economic CouncilNovember 14, 2007On November 14, GMF hosted a breakfast discussion entitled "Fostering a transatlantic economic partnership: Opportunities and challenges for the Transatlantic Economic Council," with Angelos Pangratis, deputy head of the delegation of the European Commission to the United States; John Cobau, director for international trade at the National Security Council; Kathryn Hauser, U.S. executive director of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue; and Bernhard Welschke, president of the Representative of German Industry and Trade. The event was moderated by Richard Salt, GMF transatlantic fellow. The event aimed to outline the results of the first meeting of the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC) on November 9, 2007, and address upcoming challenges and opportunities for the TEC.

U.S. journalists report their views on transatlantic economic policyMay 26, 2007From May 26 to June 3, GMF hosted 11 journalists for a study tour on European Agriculture in the 21st Century: Perspectives from the Farm. Journalists, who represented U.S. radio and print media outlets, traveled the European Union to meet with European farmers, policymakers and other agricultural stakeholders to learn more about EU agriculture at a critical time for future policy development. Berlin event previews G8-SummitMay 24, 2007

On May 24, GMF and the Alfred Herrhausen Society invited high-level representatives from the economic, scientific, and political communities to Berlin to discuss globalization and the ramifications of the G8's shift in focus to Africa, with special consideration for Asia's increasing influence on the African continent. Jörg Asmussen, Director-General of the German National and International Financial Markets and Monetary Policy Department, directly involved in the G8 preparations, opened the conference.

Cooperation on transatlantic services in the developing worldMay 16, 2007On Wednesday, May 16, Linda Schmid, Independent Consultant on International Trade Policy and Development, and Bernard Hoekman, Director of the Development Research Group at the World Bank, spoke at GMF on the importance of cooperation in transatlantic services regulation to the developing world.
