Trilateral Strategy Group


In addition to programming from GMF's Ankara office, GMF has launched a multi-year effort bringing together leaders from the US, Turkey, and Europe for twice-yearly off-the-record discussions on selected themes affecting all sides of the "triangle".  GMF partners with the Turkish Industrialists' and Business Men's Association (TUSIAD), Koc Holding, and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this activity, which will also include a series of briefings and publications for wider policy audiences.

May 2012

The sixth meeting of the Turkey Trilateral Strategy Group, titled “Can the West Cope?,” was held in Washington, DC, from May 16- 18. The meeting brought together 49 prominent participants from Turkey, the EU, and the United States to discuss a range of regional and global issues.

The meeting, held under Chatham House rules, began with a reception and dinner hosted by Turkish Ambassador Namık Tan at his residence. On the first day, GMF President Craig Kennedy, Senior Adviser to Swedish Foreign Affairs Minister Olof Ehrenkrona, and TUSIAD International’s Vice Chairman Şerif Egeli delievered the opening remarks. The meeting featured in-depth discussions on the euro-crisis, the U.S. Asia pivot, the U.S. presidential election, NATO,  and security in Middle East and North Africa.

Participants included three members of the Turkish Parliament: Nursuna Memecan (Justice and Development Party), Şafak Pavey (Republican People’s Party), and Tuğrul Türkeş (Nationalist Movement Party); Zalmay Khlalilzad (Former Permanent U.S. Representative to UN); Vali Nasr (Professor – Tuft University and Senior Fellow - Brookings Institution); Ana Palacio (Former Foreign Affairs Minister of Spain); Ruprecht Polenz (Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission - German Parliament); and Robert Wexler (President - Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation).

The Trilateral Strategy Group is organized by GMF in partnership with the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD), Koç Holding, and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
