To rise to the top in today’s world, leaders from all sectors must think and act globally. Successful leaders recognise the value of collaboration—both to meet their own professional objectives and to forge partnerships that develop sustainable solutions to global problems. For forty years the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) has pioneered programs that offer rising leaders dynamic opportunities to hone their leadership skills. 3,000 alumni from forty nations on both sides of the Atlantic count themselves as part of GMF’s rich and engaged network.
GMF offers fellowship programs and leadership development opportunities managed by the Transatlantic Leadership Initiatives (TLI) team. TLI’s initiatives have helped alumni expand their professional networks, gain unique access to GMF’s policy expertise, and think, engage, and act globally. We invite you to explore the ways GMF’s Transatlantic Leadership Initiatives could enrich your career.
A Gateway to Lifelong Learning
TLI Fellowship programs provide gateways for lifelong learning. The Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF)emphasizes the exchange of ideas, solutions, and best practices. Founded in 1982, MMF provides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders from the United States and Europe to explore politics, business, innovation, and culture across the Atlantic through experiential learning. MMF participants travel to meet formally and informally with a range of policymakers, political and corporate decision-makers, and distinguished community members. Selected fellows demonstrate proven leadership capacity, a commitment to diversity, and use their MMF experience to affect real and lasting change in their communities.
The Manfred Wörner Seminar brings together 30 young Americans and Germans annually to examine German and wider European security policy and to discuss common security interests. The Seminar deepens understanding between participants and offers the opportunity to broaden professional networks. The Asmus Policy Entrepreneurs Fellowship brings American and European policy practitioners under the age of 40 together to advance policy questions and to frame innovative alternatives to shared challenges. During the course of their one-year tenure, Asmus Fellows utilize existing GMF activities and networks, attend key GMF programs, and participate in major GMF events such as Brussels Forum.
Ways to Stay Engaged
TLI offers programs designed for a network of nearly 3,000 leaders who have completed a GMF Fellowship. An active alumni base and networking events keep fellows connected, while the following conferences and seminars meet participants’ ongoing leadership development needs.
Marshall Forum on Global Leadership
The Marshall Forum on Global Leadership (MFGL) is TLI’s premiere annual conference. Marshall Forum brings together alumni from all of TLI’s leadership development programs, and excels at showcasing emerging regions in the United States and Europe. Attendees include distinguished leaders from business, politics, civil society, and media. Marshall Forum provides participants opportunities to engage in the transatlantic dialogue, to interact with global policy experts, and to network with other emerging leaders.
Transatlantic Leadership Seminars
GMF’s Transatlantic Leadership Seminars (TLS) offer the practical knowledge, skills, and contacts to help a successful professional become a leader of truly international caliber. Each seminar assembles twenty distinguished corporate, private, and civil society professionals and transports them for one week to a dynamic region of the globe that has recently transformed itself. From the Balkans in 2013, to Turkey, Morocco, Brazil, and Korea in coming years, each Seminar brings leaders into contact with the issues and people they need to know to strengthen their careers. Leaders of international stature host intimate discussions about effective leadership. Participants return home with the practical leadership skills—and crucial contacts—needed to elevate their careers to the global level.
Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network
The Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network (TILN) addresses the critical need to advance diversity and inclusion (D&I) best practices in the transatlantic space. TILN aims to develop a guiding network of diverse leaders who are committed to inclusive societies, conduct strategic outreach, and implement a young leaders program to strengthen the diversity pipeline in transatlantic leadership.
