How to apply
Applying for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program is a multi-step process. Please note that questions regarding deadlines, which vary according to the selection process, should be directed to the local selection partner on the Selection Partners page. Please note also that selection for the next cycle of MMF Fellows who will travel in 2014 will not take place until the autumn of 2013; further information will be available on this website by the end of August 2013. Interested candidates should keep questions until this time, and plan to be in touch with GMF and Selection Partners after checking back with this website at the end of summer.
Step 1 – Nomination
Individuals interested in participating in the Marshall Memorial Fellowship must be nominated by a recognized leader in their community or professional field. All Marshall Memorial Fellowship alumni are also eligible to nominate for the program. Nominators should be in a senior position and be able to evaluate the candidate’s leadership potential.
Please note that candidates should not self-nominate or be nominated by family members. Nominators may only nominate one person each year. Nominators may not also submit a letter of recommendation for the candidate, and nominators should not also be applicants in the same selection year.
Nomination forms should be submitted to the local selection partner listed on the Selection Partners page.
Step 2 – Application
Once the nomination is submitted, the candidate will receive information on how to complete the online application, which currently includes an application form, essays, a resume/CV, and two letters of recommendation. Please remember that nominators should not also submit a letter of recommendation and that applicants should not submit letters of recommendations for other applicants.
Upon submitting their applications to the selection partner, candidates will be further informed of the interview and selection process.
Step 3 – Interview
Candidates will be notified whether they will continue into the next round of consideration and, if so, will be provided with further information regarding the interviews. All interviews are conducted in person with the selection committee and in English. Interview dates and locations will be provided to applicants as early as possible. Candidates are responsible for the costs of travel and lodging for the interview.
Step 4 – Notification
Candidates will be informally notified of the selection committee’s decision after the interview stage, and official notification will be sent by GMF by mid-November. Selected candidates will be scheduled to travel on one of the three programs the following calendar year. Within two weeks of receipt, all Fellows are required to sign and return the Fellowship acceptance letter, signifying acceptance of the terms and conditions of the program.
Please note that candidates may only apply twice for the Fellowship and may not apply in consecutive years, with the exception of candidates having only one year of eligibility remaining within the age range.
