Transatlantic Leadership Seminar

Join the German Marshall Fund for the launch of its first Transatlantic Leadership Seminar. The Transatlantic Leadership Seminars will bring together American and European leaders from the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors for exclusive, intimate, expert-guided study-travel programs to explore themes vital to effective transatlantic and global leadership. The Transatlantic Leadership Seminar is designed exclusively for the alumni of the German Marshall Fund’s leadership development programs. Participants will encounter alumni of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship, Manfred Wörner Seminar, APSA Congressional Fellowship, and Asmus Policy Entrepreneurs Fellowship programs—all of whom will come together to explore and discuss realities of global significance and take away leadership lessons they can apply back to their personal careers

GMF’s first Transatlantic Leadership Seminar will take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia in the spring of 2013 and is titled:

Topic:

Why have some regions rebounded so resiliently from the trials of authoritarian politics, failures of planned economies, and bitterness of ethnic and religious strife?  The Balkans offer a wealth of knowledge and lessons on how to attain, sustain, and grow a young and thriving liberal democracy and free market economy.

Each of the three selected sites – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia – offers a unique case study.  Ever since the end of hostilities, the newly created states of former Yugoslavia have been steadily advancing on the road to recovery and reunion with the rest of Europe and the globalized world. With substantial assistance from abroad and painstaking efforts at home, Croatia has already become a full member of the International Monetary Fund, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the World Trade Organization.  As of last summer, Croatia is poised to become the twenty-eighth member-state of the European Union. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia have both followed suit with varying degrees of success, and are continuing to invest considerable energy into reform processes that will enable them to be where Croatia is at today.

Yet despite this considerable success, challenges persist. Alongside dealing with the legacy of civil war, Communism, Fascism, and authoritarianism, local leaders are also faced with the tribulations of modernization, development, and global financial crisis. Fortunately, creativity and entrepreneurship abound, and sustainable and replicable solutions pave the way forward. GMF’s pioneering travel study tour will take European and American leaders to the forefront of change in this dynamic region, studying firsthand its ongoing successes and tribulations.

What Leaders Will Learn: The Transatlantic Leadership Seminar on the Balkans will focus on key leadership challenges in post-conflict and post-Communist societies. Key leadership themes will include:

Security and Stability: The Seminar will explore the residual effects of an armed ethnic conflict, including the legacy of perpetration or victimization, ethnocentrism, and lasting discrimination. Special attention will be given to efforts at reconciliation, confidence-building, and cooperation.

Politics and Civil Society: Participants will investigate three cases of democratization. Focus will be on the role of political, administrative, civic, religious, and foreign actors in transitions to democracy, as well as on what happens when democracies fail to meet unrealistic expectations.

Business and Competitiveness: Participants will explore the business environment in emerging market economies. Special attention will be given to leadership solutions to under and over regulation, currency fluctuations, capital control, bureaucratic red-tape, and emerging market workforce and business practices.

Natural Resources and Sustainability: The Seminar will focus on under and over exploitation of natural resources. Special attention will be given to tourism and mining, as well as successes and failures at limiting their impact on the environment and securing sustainable development.

Our approach: The Transatlantic Leadership Seminar will assemble a cohort of 15-20 leaders from across Europe and the United States for a 10-day travel study immersion in the region. The Seminar will expand the knowledge and understanding of issues of significance to transatlantic and global leadership. Learning will be achieved through briefings, exclusive meetings with opinion and decision-makers, site visits, group reflection, and dialogue with a recognized subject area experts who will lead the cohort. The Transatlantic Leadership Seminar will offer opportunities for leadership networking, professional and personal development and growth, and adventure.

Who Should Participate: Transatlantic Leadership Seminars are available exclusively to the alumni of the German Marshall Fund’s leadership development fellowships. They are designed as continuous development opportunities for distinguished business, government, media, and civil society leaders. Ideal participants will be looking for accelerated experiential learning on key transatlantic and global issues and trends.
