U.S. Trade Policy in the Asia-Pacific Region under President Trump: Implications for the European Union

Donald Trump’s election in November 2016 as President of the United States has had a wide range of geo-political and geo-economic implications, including in particular for U.S. trade policy toward Asia and the Pacific. This paper, part of a larger report produced for the European Parliament Committee on International Trade workshop on “What’s Next After the U.S. Withdrawal from TPP?,” in advance of President Trump’s November 2017 visit to Asia, briefly reviews the Obama administration’s Asia-Pacific trade strategy and the contents of Trans-Pacific Partnership before describing the Trump administration’s overall approach to trade and the steps it has taken and is likely to take in the region, concluding with a short analysis of the implications for the European Union.
