2008 Peter R. Weitz Prize call for applications
The German Marshall Fund is currently accepting entries for the ninth annual Peter R. Weitz Journalism Prize for outstanding and original coverage of transatlantic and European issues and events by the American media. The senior prize is open to all professional journalists covering European issues for a U.S. publication, regardless of citizenship. The young journalist prize is open to journalists 35 and under. Entries must include:
  • A completed entry form (see below)
  • A resume
  • Original copies or photocopies of the work nominated
  • A brief statement explaining why the entry deserves consideration

In order to be considered, submitted pieces must be limited to the reporting and analysis of European events and issues, including developments in individual countries and the wider process of European political and economic integration. Subject matter could also include political, economic, security and other issues affecting U.S.-European relations. The geographic area covered by the prizes includes Western, Central, and Eastern Europe.

Entries should be limited to a maximum of five items by the same author(s) published in a U.S. newspaper or magazine during the 2007 calendar year. Fewer than five pieces, including single items and reports by different writers if they are part of a series, may also be submitted. All entries must have been published in the United States for a U.S. media outlet; articles that have only appeared in international editions of U.S. publications are not eligible.

Entries may be submitted by news organizations on behalf of employees or directly by the entrants themselves. The prizes will be awarded to the writers of the winning entries, not to news organizations, though the organization and affiliation will be recognized. Previous prize winners may not be entered in the same category for the year immediately following their award, however they may apply again in the future or a junior prize winner may apply for the senior prize.

The jury's decision is final, and entries will not be returned. Entries must be postmarked no later than February 29, 2008.
