Marshall Memorial Fellowship Printer-Friendly Version
How to Apply in the U.S.

American Marshall Memorial Fellowship

There are two tracks for applying for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program.  If the candidate lives in one of MMF's eleven regional selection areas (listed below), all materials will be processed by the regional selection partner according to their individual time line.   If the candidate does not live in one of the regional selection areas, all materials will be processed through the national selection process via the German Marshall Fund's office in Washington, DC according to the timeline outlined below.

Regardless of where the candidate's materials are processed, applying for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program is a two step process.  The candidate must first be nominated for the program by a recognized leader in his/her community or professional field.  Once nominated, the candidate will receive application materials from the selection partner.  If selected for an interview by the selection committee, candidates will be contacted by the selection partner.  Candidates will be informally notified of the selection committee's decision after the interview stage, and official notification will be sent by GMF by mid-November.

Please see below for further details on the two tracks and two steps of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship application process.  The selection process for the next class of American Marshall Memorial Fellows began in April 2009.  All fellows selected in 2009 will travel on one of the three programs offered in 2010: spring, summer, or fall. The next selection cycle will begin in spring 2010.

Step 1 - Nominations

Individuals interested in participating in the Marshall Memorial Fellowship must be nominated by a recognized leader in their community or professional field. Please click here for general information on the program for nominators and candidates.  Once the nomination is submitted, the candidate will receive application materials and guidelines from the selection partner.  Please note that candidates should not self-nominate and that nominators should only nominate one person each year.

If the candidate lives within any of our regional selection areas, the nomination form should be sent to the corresponding regional selection partner. If he or she does not live within any of these regions, please submit the form to GMF in Washington, DC.

Step 2 - Applications

Once a nomination form is submitted, the candidate will receive the application and guidelines for applying from the selection partner. Upon submitting their applications, candidates will be further informed of the interview and selection process.  Please note that nominators should not also submit a letter of recommendation.

Step 3 - Interviews

Candidates will be contacted about interviews and final selection once they have submitted their application materials.
