Europe Should Act More American
It is often said that Europe must become more independent. That would be possible in 5G matters. But the opportunity has not yet been seized.
Germany is discussing the role of Huawei and ZTE in building its new 5G communication network infrastructure. While policymakers in Berlin have realized that they have a lot of catching up to do, there is huge political and economic pressure to move forward with the 5G frequency auctions on March 19 to ensure a speedy roll-out of the new technology. Germany is weighing its options.
In the meantime, the government has introduced provisional guidelines for network security. They call on operators to source from trustworthy suppliers only. This is buying some time to figure out the next steps in what will remain a heated debate for weeks to come. With Ericsson and Nokia there would actually be a European solution available.
