Francois Lafond on Unrest in Egypt
On February 5, 2011, François Lafond, director of GMF's Paris office, participated in a special program on France 24, to discuss the unrest in Egypt and comment on remarks delivered live by State Secretary Hillary Clinton at the 2011 Munich Security Conference.
In the debate, Lafond remarked that the Egyptian army will play a pivotal role in the forthcoming democratization process. He also suggested that the situation also revealed a certain paradox: the Egyptians were calling for bold reforms and a new regime while European capitals and the United States reiterated their calls to avoid violence and preserve a certain stability in the transition process. With the key role that Egypt has played in maintaining stability in the Middle East and in assisting the peace process over the years, he suggested that the current events will reshape not only EU-U.S. foreign policy toward Cairo, but also toward the entire Middle East region.
