GMF's Bruno Lete Joins Euronews to Discuss the Biden Transition

November 25, 2020

Bruno Lété

Senior Fellow, Security and Defense

Senior fellow Bruno Lete joined Euronews to discuss some of the President-elect’s nominations as well as expected changes in the transatlantic relationship. Lete noted that all of Biden’s picks were true transatlanticists and people who believe in the value of U.S.-EU relations. He further stated that he is expecting the tone in communication to change and that, based on mutual respect, transatlantic relations would be reset. In his view, we will see an American return to multilateralism and a U.S. foreign policy that will be driven much more by values, including liberalism and democracy. However, when it comes to defense, Lete stressed that just like previous U.S. administrations, Biden will still insist that Europeans invest in their own defense and that they take more responsibility inside NATO. In that sense, one should not expect that Americans and Europeans are “heading for a honeymoon.”
