Interview with Deutschlandfunk on Merkel’s Visit to Washington
GMF’s Vice President Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff spoke to Deutschlandfunk to discuss Angela Merkel’s last trip to Washington as Germany's chancellor. Kleine-Brockhoff stated that since the new U.S. president took office his approach of “strengthening through alliance” has become evident, and that President Biden is pushing to reform and reconstruct the West to meet new challenges on, for example, technological and ideological levels. Those include challenges from new authoritarian regimes that also have ambitious policies. In this context, Kleine-Brockhoff noted that cooperation between the United States, Germany, and Europe as a whole is critical. He noted that Germany has not yet invested that much in the partnership with the United States, despite how much Biden has done since he took office, including on the withdrawal of troops from Germany. According to Kleine-Brockhoff it should be in the interest of Germany to strengthen Biden domestically by clearing conflict issues like Nord Stream 2.
