Mareike Ohlberg on Deutschlandfunk Kultur

February 20, 2021

Mareike Ohlberg

Senior Fellow, Asia Program

GMF Senior Fellow Mareike Ohlberg joined Deutschlandfunk Kultur to discuss the ban of BBC World News in China and the standing of Western media in China more broadly. Topics discussed included the future of the independent media, Chinese censorship, as well as the asymmetric freedoms of Chinese media in Europe vs. Western media in China. Ohlberg noted that “It is not the beginning of the end, rather another step in a long line of steps undertaken by the Chinese government. Prior to that a complete freedom of information did not exist either.” Regarding the Western approach towards China, she added that “the only thing that works is using similar measures as China (…). Yet that stands in stark contrast to how we see ourselves and how the media landscape should be.”
