Rethinking the West: Ways Out of the Crisis of the Free World
Abstract: For a quarter of a century it was a commonly held view that the world was headed towards a democratic peace. Today, many believe that we are headed toward an era of right-wing populism. This type of linear thinking assumes that NATO is dead, the West will come to an end, and the liberal international order is dissolving. Instead of basking in such fatalism, the friends of freedom should end the liberal overreach of the last decades and rethink the West by adopting a more measured and skeptical, yet forceful and robust liberalism. This type of thinking could become the basis of a renewed liberal order.
