Senator Richard G. Lugar to Join GMF as Senior Fellow

December 19, 2012

WASHINGTON (December 19) – The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) today announces that Senator Richard G. Lugar will join GMF as a Senior Transatlantic Fellow after the Senator leaves the U.S. Senate in January 2013.”

“It is an honor to welcome Senator Lugar to GMF,” said GMF President Craig Kennedy. “He is a distinguished lawmaker whose service in the United States Senate is greatly admired around the globe. His expertise on international affairs and national security will be a tremendous asset to GMF’s work.”

At the end of this term, Richard Lugar will leave the U.S. Senate as the most senior Republican in that body and the longest-serving Indiana lawmaker. Respected globally as an international statesman and leader on nuclear disarmament, Lugar is the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and twice served as that committee’s chairman.

The forthcoming Lugar Institute for Diplomacy and Congress will work to change the way the United States Congress relates to the international community by improving communication and understanding between the Washington diplomatic corps and Congress.

GMF Director of Congressional Affairs Maia Comeau will direct the Institute’s activities. More information on the Institute will be announced in early 2013.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.

GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship.

In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies. Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has seven offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, Bucharest, and Warsaw. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.
