Is Trump Setting Off to War?

July 9, 2019

Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer

Director of Research, Transatlantic Security and Director of the Paris Office

More than the usual parades and fireworks, a military dimension was added to this year’s July 4 celebrations, with air patrol and armored vehicles, modelled on the Bastille Day celebrations President Donald Trump had attended in 2017. President Trump also used this opportunity to make a solemn speech celebrating American heroes, with quotes from the Founding Fathers, and describing the United States as "stronger than it has ever been". Nevertheless, the United States appears divided, and more polarized than ever, especially with regard to what role it should play on the international scene.

Where does the United States stand? What is Donald Trump's international strategy? What relationship does he imagine with Europe?

Guests:

  • François Clemenceau, international editor-in-chief of Le Journal Du Dimanche
  • Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer, director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States – Paris Office
  • Nicole Bacharan, historian and political scientist, specialist in defense issues
  • Corentin Sellin, historian and specialist of the United States
