13th Annual Congress-Bundestag Forum
The 13th Annual Congress-Bundestag Forum, a collaborative project between The German Marshall Fund of the United States and The Robert Bosch Stiftung, was held in West Point, New York and New York City from February 26 to March 2, 2016. This year’s participants included 20 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the German Bundestag.
The lawmakers engaged in expert-led discussions on a multitude of issues including countering violent extremism, power shifts in the Middle East, cyber warfare, and energy policies. This year’s unique setting, the United States Military Academy at West Point, provided a historic background for discussions. Participants had the opportunity to engage with cadets at the Academy—which included attending classes—and to learn about West Point’s place in American history.
Following the West Point leg of the trip, members of the Bundestag continued on to New York City for meetings with representatives from the technology and media sectors, among others. Throughout their time in New York, the German delegation had vibrant discussions with members of both the political left and right about the upcoming 2016 U.S. presidential elections.
In the true spirit of transatlantic cooperation, the Forum provided the opportunity for the German and American lawmakers to share policy perspectives and form personal bonds.
