Sofia Platform and the European Council on Foreign Relations – Sofia office have organized an international round table discussion with think-tank representatives in the framework of EU’s Global Foreign Policy Strategy Review with the special participation of Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The event titled “EU in a Changing Global Environment: What Next for EU’s Neighbors” was organized on July 23, 2015 in Sofia, Bulgaria with the support of the Balkan Trust for Democracy, Black Sea Trust, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and Robert Bosch Stiftung.
The review of the European Security Strategy of 2003 has started a long-awaited process. Since 2003 EU’s strategic environment has changed significantly. Indeed, in 2015 we face a Europe that is “more connected, more contested and more complex”, but the reality remains that Europe needs to take care of its neighborhood first and foremost, not only for the sake of its own security but also for the sake of paying its dues to the transatlantic partnership. Following this rationale, the Western Balkans, Turkey and the Eastern Neighborhoods should be in the core of the review. Therefore, ECFR and Sofia Platform gathered think-tank representatives from the Western Balkans and the Black Sea regions to discuss current status of European integrations within the EU Enlargement Policy and a framework of the EU Neighbouring Policy in order to contribute to the process of EU’s Global Foreign Policy Review.
All inputs from the event are available on Sofia Platform’s website.
