- John J. Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science, University of Chicago
- Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy, The German Marshall Fund of the United States
In his latest book The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities, author and international relations scholar John J. Mearsheimer argues that the role the United States has played in the world as sponsor and guarantor of the liberal order hurts the health of the nation at home. Positing that liberal hegemony is doomed to fail, he points to the negative domestic effects of U.S. efforts abroad, arguing they undermine peace and liberal values within the United States.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States is pleased to invite you to a book talk, moderated by GMF Executive Vice President Derek Chollet, to discuss options for a more restrained foreign policy that takes into consideration how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad.
GMF’s Future of American Power series discusses new books focusing on U.S. power in the world. In line with GMF's mission to strengthen transatlantic relations, these conversations specifically focus on the implications of U.S. foreign policy for its European partners, as well as other key regions for the transatlantic relationship.
