Latvia and the European Union: EU Priorities and Partnerships
On Monday, October 7th, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) in Washington, DC hosted the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Ms. Solvita Āboltiņa, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Ambassador Ojārs Kalniņš, and the Deputy Secretary for the Presidium of the Latvian Parliament, Mr. Jānis Vucāns. The off-the-record discussion focused on a number of issues impacting the political agenda in Latvia, as well as its relationship with the European Union (EU). As Latvia prepares for the EU presidency in 2015, a number of issues will continue to be relevant, including EU-U.S. relations, the EU’s relationship with its periphery, and the EU’s role in geopolitics. Following opening remarks from all participants, GMF’s Managing Director for European Offices, Mark Fischer moderated a discussion with experts and members of the policy community in attendance.
